Ali Weinstein is a documentary filmmaker from Toronto, Canada. Her films have played at festivals around the world and won awards in Canada and abroad. Her work often centers around people searching for community and a sense of belonging.

 

Ali’s first feature doc MERMAIDS, about a group of women living a mermaid lifestyle, debuted at Hot Docs 2017 and has since been broadcast in Canada, Israel, Brazil, France, and Germany. In 2018, she co-directed THE IMPOSSIBLE SWIM for TSN as part of their Engraved on a Nation series. She directed #BLESSED in 2020 about the stunning success of an Evangelical church amongst the youth of downtown Toronto, and that same year she produced her first feature documentary, THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE THIS PLACE, ANYPLACE, about the redevelopment of the iconic Honest Ed’s store in Toronto. Ali holds an MFA in Documentary Media Studies from Ryerson University.
